Former USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University team doctor Larry Nassar was sentenced to a minimum of 40 years, a maximum of 175 years in Michigan state prison earlier this year for sexually assaulting female athletes. In a hearing that took seven days, more than 160 testimonials by girls, women and their parents have reached a resolution and shown a light on the sexual misconduct in happening at Michigan State University and the USA Olympics.
It took the F.B.I. more than a year to pursue this case, between July 2015 and September 2016. At the center of the inquiry were two Olympic gold medalists. The Indianapolis Star first published a story in September 2016 featuring one woman publicly accusing Nassar of assault. Complaints about Nassar’s conduct to Michigan State athletics officials began as far back as 1997. It was only after The Indianapolis Star published an in-depth investigation detailing allegations, that the Nassar case took on urgency. Dr. Nassar was in custody by the end of 2016 and by the end of 2017, he had been convicted.
